Jack Myers aka Smee

See "Our Story" on our Articles page.

Jack Tier aka Peter Pan

I was born in Greenville, Mississippi to an Air Force family.  Both of my parents were born and raised in Butte, Montana.  Although I never lived there, that was the closest thing I had to call home until my family settled in California after my Dad retired.  I am the oldest of three children.  I have two sisters.  We grew up in the ‘60s in California.  I was involved in both Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts and really enjoyed the camping and hiking.  My first taste of hiking was the weekend outings preparing for our Boy Scout Troop’s 50 miler through the Sierra Nevada’s.  After a couple of years, I gave up Scouting for my first love - baseball.  I graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1976 and earned my Masters Degree in Space Systems Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA in 1990 (actually, I AM a Rocket Scientist).  Over the course of 23 years in the Army I served in two infantry divisions and had multiple Combat Development as well as Program Management and Systems Acquisition assignments.  I retired from the Army in 1999.  I am married with four children aged 27, 24, 23, and 21.  As a Father I did both the Little League coach and Cub Scout leader bit serving as a Den leader and Assistant Cub Master.

I was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland.  With the county line in sight of home it was natural to spend considerable time in the woods.  Ten years of Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Explorer Scouts furthered a fondness for the outdoors.  Enlisting in the US Army at 19 as a trucker was the start of real adventures.  Numerous field exercises, bivouacs and all of the outdoor training at the Jungle Warfare Center in Panama was nestled into a bookend career spanning two wars.  Vietnam and the Gulf War added a broader appreciation for climate.  Research and development became second nature as the Army assigned me to ten years of varying Combat Development duty assignments.  I spent my off-duty time as an adult Scouter serving as Cub Master, Scout Master and Explorer Advisor - all back to the woods experiences.  I retired from the Army after 27 years of service including commands at company, battalion and brigade level.  My degrees include a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Hampton Institute (1975), Masters of Science in Systems Analysis from Florida Institute of Technology (1978), and Masters of Science in National Strategy and Strategic Planning from the US Naval War College (1989).  I am married with one son age 29.

Our Philosophy

We are two Christian, family oriented, retired Army officers.  We take our business and personal philosophy from the Bible.  We do business by the Golden Rule, “treat others as you want to be treated”.  We also subscribe to the priorities of the late, great entrepreneur Mary Kay Ashe - God first, Family second, Business third.

In terms of backpacking we could be called ultra-lighters.  Our packs without consumables weigh less than 12 pounds.  However, experience has taught us that there is absolutely no reason to be uncomfortable when you go to the woods.  So, in our quest to get lighter and lighter we refused to compromise on either comfort or safety, and whenever possible looked for multiple use items.  This philosophy is reflected in the design of our products.

Our primary focus is on hammock camping and ultra light hiking.  We offer quality products that are of our own design and manufacture.  We use quality materials and excellent craftsmanship.  However, lightweight solutions often necessitate a compromise in durability of materials.  Our lightweight products are not designed or engineered to withstand abusive or careless treatment.  But, with proper use and reasonable care, even more delicate/less durable equipment will offer years, if not a lifetime, of effective service.

We take pride in our products and our customer service.  If for any reason you are dissatisfied, let us know and we will make every effort to remedy the situation within the realm of our abilities and good business practices.  Additionally, if you have suggestions for improving our products we would love to hear them.  We can’t promise to incorporate them all but we will evaluate all suggestions with an open mind.  Often good ideas are unique to a particular situation.  Others are universally applicable.  Those in the latter category, if they fit within our basic philosophy, we will endeavor to incorporate in future designs.
