FAQ

What is the temperature rating for the “Nest”?

We haven’t got a validated temperature rating from formal testing.  Based on the chart below, the Nest is a 30° quilt.  The Nest is baffled to approximately 2 inches, but between the baffles the down lofts to approximately 2.5 inches.  We have used them comfortably wearing only skivvies in the mid 40s and into the high 20s and low 30s wearing fleece long johns.  We’ve had an evaluation from another customer who was comfortable in the mid 30s.  It should be noted that although the Nest is baffled to 2 inches, the down can be shaken to the center of the quilt to achieve 2-3 inches of loft under your body.

Comfort Rating (°F)

Loft (inches)

40 1.5
30 2.0
20 2.5
10 3.25
0 4.0

How much does the “Nest” weigh?

The “Nest” with suspension cords and compression/stuff sack weighs 22 oz.  The “Nest” alone weighs 20 oz.

Does it require any modifications to my hammock?

No.  The “Nest” attaches to the hammock using two suspension cords that attach to the hammock suspension cords.

Will the “Nest” fit my hammock?

The “Nest” was specifically designed for the Hennessy Ultralite Backpacker A-sym.  However, the design of the suspension system and the Velcro closure on the slit allows it to fit all asymmetric models of the HH and most other hammocks.  The Adventure Racer requires the addition of two elastic straps.  Simply advise us when you order if you have this model and we'll add these at no cost.  The non-asymmetric models of the Hennessy require a simple modification to the Nest .  If you have one of these, again simply advise us when you order and we'll apply the modification at no cost.

Will a JRB Quilt work on a Double Eagles Nest with two people in it?

Yes.  At Trail Days 2006 we tried a No Sniveller on a double Eagles Nest with two hikers in the hammock.  The No Sniveller provided excellent coverage for both sleepers.  A second No Sniveller covered both as a top quilt as well.

Does the “Nest” come in different sizes?

The “Nest” is a one size fits all item.  The dimensions of the “Nest” are 78” x 48” with a diagonal measurement of 91.5” or about 7˝ feet.  Because one sleeps on the diagonal in a hammock this should provide most people adequate cold weather protection.

Does the “Nest” come in different colors?

We do not offer a choice in colors.  Fabric availability limits our options.  Our preferred color is the Dark Olive pictured above but it is not always available.  In any case, we endeavor to use subdued colors in order to blend into the forest background.

What's the difference between the Nest and the No Sniveller?

Both the Nest and the No Sniveller are 78"x48"x2" down quilts.  The technical qualities (size, baffle height, and quantity and quality of down) in these two quilts are the same.  The Nest was initially designed specifically as an under quilt for the Hennessy Backpacker Ultra-light A-Sym.  It has a slit to accommodate the Hennessy bottom entry.  The No Sniveller was designed in response to the results of a customer survey conducted on WhiteBlaze.net - Under-quilts - the best answer.  It's primary use is as a sleeping quilt but also includes a head hole so that it can be worn around camp as a serape.  In addition, the No Sniveller is equipped with corner loops so that it can be used as an under quilt either by itself or doubled up with a Nest in extreme cold weather.  See our products pages for detailed descriptions of each.

Will my hammock and JRB quilt fit in HH Snake Skins?

Hennessy Hammocks makes Snake Skins in four sizes.  The #4 Snake Skins accommodate the Hennessy Hammock Super Shelter but can be used to encase several combinations of Hennessy Hammocks and JRB Quilts.  The fly or tarp will NOT fit in the #4 snake skins with the hammock and quilt so it must be remove and packed separately.  Packing the hammock and quilt in the #4 Snake Skins results in a very tight compression of the quilt and should not be used for more than one or two day storage, i.e. while actually on a backpacking trip (do not leave your hammock and quilt stored in the snake skins in your pack at home). All down product in nylon shells including JRB quilts should be routinely stored uncompressed in a cool, dry environment not exposed to sun light.

The HH #4 snake skins may also work for other hammock brands and quilt combinations.

Getting the hammock and quilt into the snake skins takes a little effort (not excessive).  Whether the ease and convenience of setting up your camp site is worth the effort to use the snake skins is a matter of personal preference.  JRB quilts can be attached to and removed from the hammock in under a minute and pack very compactly in their own waterproof compression sack.

The Weather Shield bottom doesn’t have a slit in it.  Why not and how do I get in and out of my Hennessey Hammock?

The Weather Shield was made without a slit to simplify the design and maximize weather protection.  It totally prohibits any form of draft thru the entrance slit.  It was also kept as a simple rectangle so that it could be worn over the shoulders as a cape by the light and fast crowd who have pitched their extended length poncho as their tarp.  This provides rain protection for a trip to the latrine or to the shelter during inclement weather without disturbing the sheltered hammock.

Entry and exit is simple. Walk up to the foot end, grasp the side of the Weather Shield, gently push it down and away from the slit. Walk in, turn around, sit, pull your legs in and the elastic suspension system will automatically return the Weather Shield to its proper position.  To exit, put out a foot, catch the edge of the Weather Shield, slide it to the right and exit normally.  When the hammock is empty you may have to reposition the Weather Shield manually, since there is no weight in it to activate the self return feature.

Is there any danger of contracting Avian Flu from using down products?
