The JRB Weather Shield, Type 2 (WS2)

Price:  $59.95

Description:  Protects your quilts from fog, heavy dew, and rain splash and provides 5 to 10 degrees additional warmth.  Use it as a weather shield for your under quilt, or for your top quilt, or as a bivy on the ground, or as a ground cloth.

The original two piece JRB Weather Shield system has been redesigned to a single piece.  It may be used as a Hammock Bottom Weather Shield over an under quilt on any hammock, or as a top quilt Weather Shield inside of a hammock, it may be used as a quilt bivi by a ground dweller, or it can be used as a ground cloth.  It's waterproof, and windproof where it needs to be and breathable where it needs to be.  The WS2 is made of a combination of silnyl side panels (moss green) and 1.1 ounce DWR ripstop nylon center panel (black).  The redesigned WS2 is both longer and wider than the original yet it is over 20 percent lighter.  Finally, the ability to form a foot box has been added as a standard feature to this highly versatile piece of protective gear.

The JRB Weather Shield, Type 2 is nominally 80 inches by 62 inches with a tab mounting system that is compatible with the Jacks ‘R’ Better suspension system (sold separately, not included) and our family of standard size  quilts and under quilts.  It may be used alone in Summer by the fast and light who are looking for a “Taco" like minimalist answer.  When used alone it should provide comfort to approximately 60 degrees.  A pad or clothing can be added for additional insulation.  It can be used over a single three season quilt and its new size is adequate to be used over two stacked under quilts in the Winter.  It should add 6-10 degrees of range to these options.  Weight is 7 oz.  The WS2 now comes with a matching moss green silnyl stuff sack.

NOTE:  The JRB Weather Shield, Type 2 will work on all hammocks.  However, the WS2 requires a minor modification to function optimally on the non-asymmetric models of Hennessy hammocks.  If you have one of these, simply advise us when you order and we will apply the modification at no cost.

How to get the most from your JRB Weather Shield, Type 2 (WS2)

The Jacks ‘R’ Better, LLC Weather Shield, Type 2, or WS2, is an extremely simple design with great flexibility.  It is nominally a 62 by 80 inch rectangle of material.  Actually, it is two panels of silicone impregnated rip stop nylon separated by a center panel of Durable Water Resistent (DWR) 1.1 ounce ripstop nylon.  It has JRB corner tabs, cinching end cords and toggles, and side ladder loops.  New with the WS2 is the standard JRB omni-tape foot box.  It weighs an amazingly light 7.5 ounces including its 0.3 ounce silnyl stuff sack.

The WS2 is useful in several modes:

            Hammock bottom weather shield

            Hammock under quilt weather shield

            Hammock top quilt/bag weather shield

            Quilt bivi for ground use

            Wind block

Emergency ground cloth for one or two

Emergency combination ground cloth and wind block for one

            Emergency blanket

Hammock bottom weather shield

In this mode the WS2 is used by itself with a JRB Suspension System (sold separately).  It is an effective wind block for the hammock sides.  The bottom is breathable.  This is the lightest form of JRB hammock under protection for summer use.  It will provide 6-10 degrees of warmth over the hammock alone.  A great answer for the 65-75 degree nights when you want to cool off to sleep, yet remain warm enough to remain asleep.  Other carried clothing may be added between the hammock and the WS2 as insulation to extend its temperature range.  The new material and design is durability enough to allow the use of forest duff as emergency insulation.

Hammock under quilt weather shield

In this mode the WS2 is used outside an under quilt with the existing suspension system of the under quilt.  It is waterproof where it needs to be and breathable where it needs to be.  This is an ideal set up in extremely damp climates or where thick, soaking, “pea soup” fog is a problem.  It has been sized for use with all JRB Standard size quilts in the under quilt mode to allow full loft.  In fact, the sizing will also allow for the addition of forest duff between the under quilt and the WS2.  By itself it adds 6-10 degrees of additional protection to any quilt.

Hammock top quilt/bag weather shield

In this mode the WS2 has its foot sack formed.  It is used over the top quilt or sleeping bag.  It retains all the ease of use of quilts over alternative and heavier sleeping bags and full bivies.  It is an ideal solution to damp climates and the previously noted fog problems.  It is a great temperature range extension for any quilt or bag.  It will provide 6-10 degrees of additional warmth.

Quilt bivi for ground use

In this mode it is an effective bivi sack for quilt users drawing on the ability to form the foot box.  It is waterproof on the sides and breathable on the top.  It uses the draw cord on the head end to form either shoulder pockets or form a full cinch around the neck by tying the cord ends  in a bow behind the head.  The sides are tucked just like the quilt.  It is noteworthy that because the WS2 is 14 inches wider than the Family of JRB Standard quilts it will allow for full loft of the quilt and still have 5-7 inches of additional material on each side thus significantly increasing tuck retention.

Wind block

How many times have you wished for a more sheltered location?  In this mode the 62x80 inch wind proof sheet is tied out by its four corner loops to form a wind block.  It is simple and effective and may be used separately or in conjunction with a tarp overhead.

Emergency ground cloth for one or two

In this mode the user is seeking protection from ground moisture.  Either spread the WS2 on the ground or peg it out by the four corner loops.  Each of the silnyl panels is 25 by 80 inches. It provides more than adequate ground sheet protection for one or two ground sleepers.

Emergency combination ground cloth and wind block for one

In this mode additional wind block protection is added to the ground cloth option.  A length of line is laid along one of the center seams and pegged down at the ends. The side is tied up by the corner loop and the second silnyl panel on the ground continues to function as a ground cloth.  This mode is especially handy when exposed sites are all that’s available and/or tarps are too small to get both adequate top cover and full side protection on the windward side.

Emergency blanket

Although it does not have a metallic reflector side, the WS2 can be used as an emergency wrap similar to simple foil emergency blankets.
