Big Meadows Summer Backpacking Quilt Details:
- Size And Shape: The head end is 56″ (1.42 m) wide down to the midpoint and tapers to 46″ (1.17m) at the foot end. A foot box can be formed using snaps and a drawcord.
- 1000FP Down: Fill Power(FP) Fill is a number that indicates the relative performance quality of down. The number comes from a lab test that measures how many cubic inches of loft one ounce of that down fill produces. Higher fill power numbers indicate greater loft requiring less down by weight. 1000FP quilts provide the best warmth-to-weight ration and compress down to a small size for easy packing.
- Over-stuff: Big Meadows Ultralight 40° Summer Backpacking Quilts are optimized with a 25% over-stuff. Besides reducing downshifting it also enables the quilt to maintain its rating if the down loses loft between cleanings. Subsequently, we do not recommend any additional overstuffing.
- Foot Box: The standard footbox is formed with a drawcord, cord locks, and double-sided Kam Snaps. This allows the quilt to be left as a blanket for easy venting in the summer, a footbox to be formed, or multiple quilts to be stacked in colder temperatures.
- Shoulder Pockets: Use the snaps and a drawcord at the head end to form pockets that keep your shoulders warm while you toss and turn.
- Long-Term Storage: All Big Meadows Summer Backpacking Quilts come in a zippered storage bag. This bag does not compress the quilt and allows airflow. Consequently makes it perfect for long-term quilt storage.
- Packing: We recommend using a lawn contractor bag while backpacking to keep your summer backpacking quilt dry while allowing it to expand or compress to evenly fill available space in your backpack. Alternatively, we offer compression sacks separately for individuals looking to pack their quilt into the smallest space possible.

I bought one of these many years ago (10+), and I love it. It’s perfect for temps down to 40F (I sleep warm); below that, and you’ll need to wear clothes (I got caught on Tricorner Knob in the Smoky Mts and temps fell well below freezing with 30+ mph winds – cool sleeping, but with all my clothes and the quilt, it was fine). It packs up small and lofts quickly and fully. I’ve only had to wash it a few times, and with proper washing, it does great. Love the footbox velcro for cold nights. The snaps for poncho use is nice for cold mornings. This was one of the best backpacking purchases I have ever made.

I purchased a Big Meadows 40 degree quilt in 2022 & it has accompanied me on various backpacking trips all over the western U.S. & extensively throughout the High Sierra. It’s deceptively light yet warm & packs down to a rather compact size. It’s kept me warm down into the low 30’s but I am warm sleeper & it goes without saying that this quilt is just 1 component of a “sleep system”. It’s my go-to quilt for 3/4 of the year. I love how soft the material is. I went with the non-sewn foot box as I usually use it as a blanket, only using the snaps & cinch cord when the temps dip down low. I added elastic cordage & micro buckles to be able to secure it around my pad when I need to bundle up. This is a great & reasonably priced quilt. I have a multitude of other “high end” quilts & bags but this one goes with me everywhere. Very satisfied with this purchase.

I have had the 40 degree model for a couple years and hands down it is the best, most versatile quilt I’ve owned for both hammocking and ground camping. It offers the best support for side and belly sleepers. It works great with a variety of pad straps and pads.
Nice work JRB!
